2017 will be remembered as the year that corporate social responsibility (CSR) was once again redefined. Although CSR will always be grounded in business operations, the stakes have gotten a lot higher. Companies must now share not only what they stand for, but what they stand up for.
We are pleased to share the newly released 2017 Cone Communications CSR Study. The study, with benchmark data dating back to 1993, examines not only consumer attitudes, perceptions and behaviors around CSR, but also if and how companies should stand up for social injustices.
Key findings include:
Americans Believe Progress on Key Social and Environmental Issues Will Slow: 67% of Americans believe progress on social and environmental issues will be slowed in the absence of government regulation.
But, They Expect Continued CSR Commitments: 79% expect businesses to continue improving their CSR efforts.
Consumers Look to Companies to Drive Change: 63% are hopeful businesses will take the lead to drive social and environmental change moving forward.
Americans are Willing to Reward or Boycott Companies Based on Corporate Values: 87% purchase a product because a company advocated for an issue they cared about, and 76% refuse to purchase a company’s products or services upon learning it supported an issue contrary to their beliefs.
…And Will Support Companies That Stand Up Against Social Injustices: 78% want companies to address important social justice issues.
Today’s complex political environment, combined with the pressing challenges facing the world, leaves Americans wondering where to turn next. The 2017 Cone Communications CSR Study reveals Americans are giving companies not only the invitation but the mandate to step up to solve today’s most complex social and environmental issues. Now is the time to not just stand for, but stand up for something that matters.
